As the saying goes “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. But no, these guys built this beautiful sculpture for a hotel knowing damn well part of it was against religious law. You think they would not install the ‘people’ or build it somewhere else.

Nope.

And now it’s destroyed.

The government ordered the destruction of the artwork, after a court ruled it to be a threat to “Islamic unity and the peace and interests of the Maldivian state” , the Malaysian Independent reported, despite the authorities previously granting permission .

This is dumb. Any depiction of humans in art is “discouraged” under Islamic law? They aren’t even doing anything explicitly anti-Islamic.

Maybe the government’s destruction of this work of art is the work of art.

Be respectful.  It's an Islamic country and those are the rules that they live by there.  Sure we can disagree with it but they should have known better from the word GO.  So I mad at the artist and the hotel

Oh, I totally get it. And in defence of the government there (who must have approved it at some point) they seem to only be withdrawing it due to public pressure.

I always respect others cultures/beliefs and try to accommodate as much as I can.

Saying artists should be mindful of local sensitivities is a pretty weak take. One of the main aspects of art is to be provacative. Think of all the great art the world would be without had artists caved to the suoerstitions of whatever society they found themselves in.

I encourage artists the world over to openly disobey religious “laws”. Islamic or otherwise.

Sounds like this guy accidentally broke Islamic law. I would have been a little more flagrant in my idolatry.

interesting - very surprising that a global hotel chain would have let that through.  Either a bunch of folks dropped the ball or the original plan all along was to have it cut up - all press is good press.

You’re projecting freedoms that are taken for granted in the US to shitholes with extremely controlling governments. In the US, we have freedom of religion, speech & expression, as well as the separation of church and state.

Places like the Maldives don’t. You either comply or GTFO. It’s kinda sad when you think about it.

Since they had received governmental permission beforehand, I’d be pissed.

I’m not projecting anything. I’m encouraging artists to break the law. The US still has plenty of obcenity laws on the books, so we definitely aren’t exempt from censoring artists in order to appeal to certain puritanical tendencies.

And the Maldives is definitely not a shithole. They’re immensely gorgeous islands.

Agreed that the islands themselves are immensely gorgeous, at least judging by the pics on the internet. However, the combination of those immensely gorgeous islands and the government in place there results in a shithole due to their controlling nature and restriction of freedoms.
